Children Rights Advocacy Program
Children's rights violations in Uganda are widespread, characterized by high rates of sexual exploitation, child labor, and abuse. Despite legal frameworks, factors like poverty, child neglect, and entrenched cultural norms lead to severe issues, including child sacrifice, early marriage, and high rates of sexual violence, affecting a large percentage of girls and boys in Uganda.
Sexual abuse and exploitation are critically high, with 2023 data showing over 14,800 reported sexual assault cases, yet conviction rates remain very low, often below 3%. Child sexual abuse is rampant, with 12,780 defilement cases reported in 2022, primarily affecting girls (12,470), while 22% of women and 8% of men experience sexual violence in their lifetime.
TAL Foundation's Children Rights Advocacy Program advocates for children's rights in Uganda through grassroots approach that bridges the gap between national policies and the daily reality of vulnerable children. We leverage our proximity to families to ensure children's rights to survival, development, protection, and participation are met at the village and parish levels.
Conducting training for parents, caregivers, and local leaders to identify and report violence against children (VAC), Establishing Child Rights Clubs (CRCs) in schools to empower children to speak up about issues affecting them and Linking rights advocacy to direct service delivery, such as providing free schooling, nutritious meals, and clean water to break the cycle of poverty are some of the activities under this program.
